  1. dwm - dynamic window manager
  2. ----------------------------
  3. dwm is an extremely fast, small, and dynamic X11 window manager.
  4. Requirements
  5. ------------
  6. In order to build dwm you need the Xlib header files.
  7. Installation
  8. ------------
  9. Edit config.mk to match your local setup (dwm is installed into
  10. the /usr/local namespace by default).
  11. Afterwards enter the following command to build and install dwm (if
  12. necessary as root):
  13. make clean install
  14. If you want to use a customized config.h, you can use the following
  15. command for installing dwm:
  16. make CONFIG=<your-config>.h clean install
  17. Running dwm
  18. -----------
  19. Add the following line to your .xinitrc to start dwm using startx:
  20. exec dwm
  21. In order to connect dwm to a specific display, make sure that
  22. the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, e.g.:
  23. DISPLAY=foo.bar:1 exec dwm
  24. (This will start dwm on display :1 of the host foo.bar.)
  25. In order to display status info in the bar, you can do something
  26. like this in your .xinitrc:
  27. while true
  28. do
  29. echo `date` `uptime | sed 's/.*://; s/,//g'`
  30. sleep 1
  31. done | dwm
  32. Configuration
  33. -------------
  34. The configuration of dwm is done by editing config.h.
